“One-Way Moon” by Book Club album design

Art Direction, Design & Hand Typography

🔹

CONTEXT

As a designer, sometimes you need to shut your screen, open your sketchbook, and remind yourself why passion projects are so important.

CHALLENGE

Designing for an artistic endeavor means working without a brief; the work is much more interpretive, subjective, and open-ended.

OBJECTIVE

Create a uniquely custom design that captures the vibe of the music, is rooted in part of the album narrative, stands out from everything else on the shelf, and will work in color and b/w.

APPROACH

Hand craft every element of the album with only a pencil and an eraser, then vectorize and trace all components to bring the art to life.

RESULT

In the words of Bob Pollard (!!) who hand received a copy:

“I listened to the album, thanks for sending it to me. Tell Robbie that I played it and after that I played Leonard Cohen's Songs of Love and Hate and Book Club stands up well to Cohen. Tell him that I also think the package is incredible. Please pass along my congratulations.”
